The NEKC Alley Project

A visual story of
Hope Garden
THE ALLEY PROJET
by:
We Become More - Growing Together Logo

The Beginning
google street view of the alley before any work was done

How it started: Graffiti, weeds, and trash.

The alley was a dump.
-
Literally.

Become More standing in the overgrown alley on day 1

Time to work!

1) :Learn
Find out what is growing in the alley,
what was left (dumped) in the alley,
who was in the alley,
when were they there,
What were they doing,
and why were they there?
 Then we could start making a plan of action;
how could this alley Become More? How can we help?
Become More identifying plants growing in the alley
Roses growing over the fence in the alley

2) Volunteer
Pick up and sort the resources and the trash.
We wanted to make sure that we recycled what could be recycled, that we used what we could use, donate what could be donated, and only throw away what was truly trash.
We cleaned everything that was good for donation and added trash cans to start lowering the amount of trash littering the alley.

3) Play :)
Become More playing in the trees
Become More laying in the dirt
Become More crawling in the dirt under trees
There was still a lot of work to be done!

4) Create
Pull the weeds and build the soil.
We were building garden beds on top of old pavement so we needed to build up the soil.
We pulled weeds growing in the cracks of the sidewalks around the neighborhood to help build the soil in the alley. By doing this, we were feeding two birds with one worm!
Put them to their duties!
Using the bricks, rocks, and tires in the alley, we built walls for the raised garden beds. Then we filled most of the tires with dirt to turn them into flower pots, the tires that still had rims we used to create seating for people using the alley which gave the alley some character!
We used the resources we had from the alley to repair the fences in the alley.
This was virtually a FREE, although temporary fix.

Hole cut into the fence in the alley
Using a pallet to temporarily repair the fence in the alley
Clothes got kicked up from under mulch in the alley

We used the clothes that were too damaged to donate as a weed block on the path and in the garden beds, but it didn't always work out as planned!
Slowly but surely...

It started to come together!

5) Build Community
We built positive relationships with the community.
The bright clothing and big smiles really helped! <3

6) Educate
We told everyone why we were there and what we were doing. We educated people about waste and the sustainability goals. We asked questions. We explained our process and how we were using would-be wasted resources as tools to create this beautiful space.
The community was given resources to help prevent an overdose in order to save lives.
Passing out Narcan - Community outreach.
You could finally see what we were trying to build here; we were accomplishing our mission.

BBQ in the hood

The community was really enjoying it too!

The litter continued, but not the dumping.
We were making progress!
The garden started to bloom.

Chipdrop mulch used for the alley

The Mulch has arrived!

Thank you Chipdrop!
We laid down mulch, painted the tires and began painting murals down the fences.

A picture is worth 1000 words...

This story is not over.

Set Free
The Mural, "Set Free" was designed to complament the work done in the alley, and
to inspire to the patrons of the alley
to Become More.

The, "Set Free" mural was comissioned by The NE Kc chamber of Commerce and the CID
and was painted in october 2022 on the side of the, "el paso del norte" building.

It's time to celebrate!
The Ne Kc Chamber of Commerce and the CID hosted a wonderful reveal party for the alley, and for the new murals!
